Indonesian Government Takes a Concern on Investment Negatif List

The Indonesian government plans to issue amendments to the Perpres relating to investment next year with the aim of replacing the negative investment list into a positive list. The government will start promoting priority industries that are open to both foreign and domestic investment.

The government implements an investment ban to protect local companies. The full investment ban will only apply to certain business sectors, including gambling, cannabis cultivation, chemical weapons, and wildlife trade. For businesses outside the chosen sector, the government will make a priority list for them to receive more investment. Several sectors that could add value to Indonesia were proposed to be included in the priority list, including coal gasification, the automotive and electronics sectors.

The publication of the upcoming priority industry list will mark a change in the government’s DNI policy which aims to open the way for more investment in Indonesia. The government’s biggest goal is to open up foreign investment opportunities into Indonesia for various sectors and also plan to abolish the requirement of having to get a recommendation from the ministry.
With the latest policy plan, it is expected that more detailed business fields are on the list of positive and negative investments. In addition, with the realization of this latest policy later with the tax holiday as a key factor that will support the success of positive investment in the development of priority industries.
